Welcoming Families From Around the World

The name of my family’s country of origin is:
New Mexico
Five ways in which I will prepare myself to be culturally responsive towards this family is by:
Calling a meeting with the child parents to find out things about the child and parents such as, do the child speak Spanish or English, any disabilities, anything special I should know?
Set up the classroom in Spanish and English with toys, books, games, ABC’s, food etc.
Let the other children know that there will be a new student entering the class.
When the child arrive have his or her cubby, seat, name already assigned.
A brief statement describing in what ways you hope that these preparations will benefit both you and the family.
I think by having things already in place when the child arrives will make the child and the family feel more welcome to the classroom.

  1. I like how you included various parts on your classroom to a new student. I feel that often times this is forgotten. I found an idea on Pinterest where you took a ziplock bag and put things in it for a new student (journal, name tag, passes, etc.) so that when you got a new student, all you had to do was pull out the bag. I have also seen new student checklists, where there is a list of things that you need to update when you get a new student (class list, lunch card, library card, birthday chart, etc.) Thanks for the post!

  2. Having told the children that a new child is coming to join the class would prepare the children to receive the child in a better way.

  3. Your idea to notify the class that a new student would be arriving is great! I too believe that having the child's cubby set up and having a "place" for them allows them to already feel welcomed and a part of their new class.

  4. You have a great start to helping the child feel welcomed into your classroom. What if they do not speak any English? How do you feel you can accommodate them in that situation?

  5. Hi Sheena, I like how you are going to call a meeting to find out the very important information about the family so that you can integrate it into your curriculum. It will make the child and family feel important and a part of the program.

  6. Letting the other students know there will be a new student coming to the classroom is a great idea. That would give you a chance to educate them on his culture and obvious differences they will notice as a result. this will also encourage a level of acceptance among peers which is very crucial.
